Why do they say that? There are clearly more.
I will continue to look into this, but so far I found one interesting comment. https://bible.org/seriespage/
The format of this blog is:
- A section of scripture
- Questions about the scripture.
- Various mainstream views about the scripture (which may not be correct, or I may disagree with).
- Sometimes my opinion is added. It starts with "My 2 Cents"
- The blog authors will add information, opinions and responses (which will be clear by their name. For all the previous things they will usually be under the name, "Bruce").
on to the question about the 14 generations in Matthew 1:
ReplyDeleteHere's a very long article about it: http://www.rtforum.org/lt/lt13.html
I didn't make it through the whole thing, but here are some ideas I picked up:
1. It was very common that Jewish genealogies contain gaps. When Jewish people say that someone begat someone, they are talking about descendants, not necessary direct children.
2. It's possible that Matthew may have left people out because they were evil or illegitimate.
3. Finally, Matthew was setting up a pattern for the waning and waxing of the moon. The Jewish lunar calendar was 28 days long and had powerful symbology to the Jewish people. So the moon waxed from Abraham to David, waned from David to the exile, and waxed again from the exile to Christ.
